These tests are critical for understanding how plastic raw materials behave during packaging, transport and processing. Apparent (bulk) density is a measure of a material's 'bulkiness' and is used to determine the volume of a hopper or mold that will be filled. Pourability indicates how readily a fine-grained material flows through funnels and feed tubes, and whether it can deliver material at a consistent weight — providing direct input for feeder and hopper design.
Coesfeld offers a product family that can measure these two properties separately according to ISO and ASTM standards, or simultaneously in a single combined instrument. All instruments are built on a sturdy, warp-resistant stand and equipped with a collection tray for clean operation.
- Bulk Density / Apparent Density: ISO 60–based funnel instrument, calibrated measuring cup (certified optional)
- Pourability: ISO 6186–based stainless steel funnel with interchangeable jets
- Combined Instrument: time-saving, simultaneous measurement of pourability and bulk density in a single setup
- ASTM D1895 Set: 3 separate methods, from fine granules (Method A) to coarse granules (Method B) and flake/fiber/strip materials (Method C)
1. Bulk Density / Apparent Density (ISO 60)
A funnel system for measuring the apparent density of free-flowing powder or granules. Material is poured from a height-adjustable filling funnel into a calibrated measuring cup; the excess is levelled off with a stainless steel scraper and the cup is weighed to calculate the density.
- Sturdy, warp-resistant stand
- Height-adjustable filling funnel; quick-close mechanism with return spring
- Stainless steel scraper
- Calibrated measuring cup (certificate optional)
- Drip tray for excess material
- Combined instruments available (e.g. pourability/bulk density together)
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Funnel | Height 115 mm, volume ~200 ml |
| Measuring cup | 100 ± 0,5 ml |
| Dimensions (WxDxH) | 260 x 160 x 210 mm |
| Weight | ~3.5 kg |
Standards: DIN 53466 · DIN EN ISO 171 · DIN EN ISO 60 · GB/T 1636-2008 Method A/B
2. Pourability
An instrument for measuring the flow performance of free-flowing powder or granules through a funnel. A stainless steel funnel with a polished surface and a top diameter of ~110 mm; grounded, with interchangeable jets so different flow diameters can be tested.
- Stainless steel funnel, polished surface, top diameter ~110 mm
- Grounded funnel (prevents static charging)
- Interchangeable jets; different jet diameter options (ordered separately)
- Various stand constructions available
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Funnel | Ø 110 mm, 40° angle |
| Dimensions (WxDxH) | 290 x 160 x 210 mm |
| Weight | ~7.5 kg |
Standard: DIN EN ISO 6186
3. Combined Pourability & Bulk Density Tester
A combined system providing time-saving, simultaneous measurement of pourability and bulk/apparent density in a single setup. Includes a jetless plastic granule pouring funnel, a 100 ± 0.5 ml density measuring cup, a collection tray, a movable closing plate, and a support holding the pouring funnel and the molding-component scraper.
- Time-saving, simultaneous measurement
- Plastic granule pouring funnel (jetless)
- Apparent density measuring cup 100 ml ± 0.5 ml
- Collection tray, movable closing plate
- Special materials to ISO 17190-9 / WSP standards available on request
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Funnel | Ø 110 mm, 40° angle |
| Dimensions (WxDxH) | 290 x 160 x 210 mm |
| Weight | ~8 kg |
Standards: DIN EN ISO 6186 · WSP 250.3 · WSP 260.2 · similar to ISO 60 · NWSP 251.0.R(15) · ISO 17190-9
4. Bulk Density — ASTM D1895 (3 Methods)
A measuring system for determining the bulk density of free-flowing powder or granules according to ASTM D1895. The test provides a general measure of particle size and distribution that can affect processing consistency, and reflects packaging quantity. Three separate instruments are available depending on material form.
| Method | Application | Equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Metot A | Fine granular material | V-shaped measuring funnel, 100 cm³ measuring cup capacity, stand with funnel closure |
| Metot B | Coarser granular material than Method A | V-shaped measuring funnel, 400 cm³ measuring cup capacity, stand with funnel closure |
| Metot C | Flake, strip, chip and cut fiber materials | 1000 ml measuring cylinder, weight plunger for compacting material, lead shot |
Standard: ASTM D1895
Application Area
Compounding, injection molding feed line design, hopper and feeder design, packaging and shipping optimization, raw material incoming quality control for production consistency. Used for materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene in powder, pellet, granule, flake and cut fiber form.
