Bulk Density & Pourability Testers

Determination of the bulk/apparent density and pourability of free-flowing plastic raw materials in powder or granule form, using funnel-based methods. Four different solutions, from standalone instruments to a combined measuring system and 3-method sets according to ASTM D1895.

These tests are critical for understanding how plastic raw materials behave during packaging, transport and processing. Apparent (bulk) density is a measure of a material's 'bulkiness' and is used to determine the volume of a hopper or mold that will be filled. Pourability indicates how readily a fine-grained material flows through funnels and feed tubes, and whether it can deliver material at a consistent weight — providing direct input for feeder and hopper design.

Coesfeld offers a product family that can measure these two properties separately according to ISO and ASTM standards, or simultaneously in a single combined instrument. All instruments are built on a sturdy, warp-resistant stand and equipped with a collection tray for clean operation.

1. Bulk Density / Apparent Density (ISO 60)

A funnel system for measuring the apparent density of free-flowing powder or granules. Material is poured from a height-adjustable filling funnel into a calibrated measuring cup; the excess is levelled off with a stainless steel scraper and the cup is weighed to calculate the density.

2. Pourability

An instrument for measuring the flow performance of free-flowing powder or granules through a funnel. A stainless steel funnel with a polished surface and a top diameter of ~110 mm; grounded, with interchangeable jets so different flow diameters can be tested.

3. Combined Pourability & Bulk Density Tester

A combined system providing time-saving, simultaneous measurement of pourability and bulk/apparent density in a single setup. Includes a jetless plastic granule pouring funnel, a 100 ± 0.5 ml density measuring cup, a collection tray, a movable closing plate, and a support holding the pouring funnel and the molding-component scraper.

4. Bulk Density — ASTM D1895 (3 Methods)

A measuring system for determining the bulk density of free-flowing powder or granules according to ASTM D1895. The test provides a general measure of particle size and distribution that can affect processing consistency, and reflects packaging quantity. Three separate instruments are available depending on material form.

Application Area
